
Topic 2: How Inclusive Am I? Experiences and Reflections of a Teacher
In the following sections, you will carry out an activity encouraging you to reflect on your experiences as both a school student and a teacher. The videos provided, as well as the guiding questions, are intended as food for thought and as avenues for you to identify and share your perceptions on inclusion, inclusive classrooms, and socio-emotional learning.
The following information is also provided for you in a pdf format in the Exercise Files so that you can download it if you wish. The same activity has been compiled in BlendSpace for you and added here as a link should you wish to use it in your classrooms or share it with your colleagues.
Activity Outline
Before viewing the videos provided, you are invited to think of your school days and be reminded of your school memories.
- Which teachers do you associate with feelings of well-being and pleasure?
- What activities can you remember that evoked such feelings for you?
- What were the characteristics of these activities?
- Can you write down at least 2 adjectives describing them?
- Which teachers and what types of activities do you associate with bad memories or feelings?
- What were their characteristics?
- Can you write down at least 2 adjectives describing them?
Whilst viewing the 3 videos provided you are asked to note down the teachers’ teaching styles and the student’s responses.
After viewing the 3 videos provided you will be invited to answer the following questions.
- Which teacher is the most inclusive? Mrs. Gruel, Mr. Keating or Mr. Wengen?
- Which teacher, in your opinion is using SEL?
- Which is the most inclusive class? Why?
