Video 2: “The Box (La Boîte)” by ESMA

The animated video La boite (the box) features an elderly man and a mouse. The wordless video, has been recently featured in Giunti Scuola (Frigo M. 2021) and lauded as a useful tool in facilitating activities aiming at recognizing intentions and moods. It is not immediately apparent how the story will unfold, for example, we can not predict what will happen to the relationship of the two main characters. In fact, at various stages of the story, the imagery is suggestive of alternative narratives and storyline outcomes, something that proves to be different in the end. Apparently the elderly man seems to want to catch and eliminate a mouse that is after his provisions, but we later discover different intentions and reactions. The relationship between the two characters is characterized by various turning points, shown by the characters’ expressions and by their silent dialogue.
